THE LESSON

The “How Can I Help?” lesson is focused on sharing helpful ways to support friends and family members who are living with depression and anxiety symptoms.  This free confidential resource is available to Canadians 18 years or older who are comfortable using the internet. This lesson is focused on those looking to find strategies for supporting a friend or family member with their mental health.

How effective is the “How Can I Help?” Lesson?

The “How Can I Help?” lesson draws from studies on educating family members and friends of individuals experiencing anxiety and depression. While this lesson is currently under evaluation by our Unit, existing research suggests that providing education and support to an individual’s support network can positively impact those experiencing mental health concerns. Your input on this course will be invaluable in helping us understand if this lesson is helpful .

How long does it take to complete?

The “How Can I Help?” lesson consists of one lesson and several worksheets. The materials are self-directed and can be accessed online at any time during the 4-week period. Participants are asked to review the lesson regularly. In addition, you will receive supportive automated messages and reminders during the 4 weeks that provide tips on supporting your family member or friend. 

Will my progress be monitored?

No, the “How Can I Help?” lesson is self-guided. All individuals in this lesson will complete brief questionnaires before they begin, 4 weeks after starting the lesson, and then 3 months after the end of the 4-week period. These questionnaires will help us evaluate the lesson but they will not be reviewed by a therapist or guide. These questionnaires do not take very long but provide us with important information about the “How Can I Help?” lesson.

Who can take part in the lesson?

This lesson is designed for Canadian residents who are at least 18 years of age.

This lesson is provided in an online course format. This lesson is not recommended if you have difficulties using the internet and navigating webpages.

Due to the lesson being written in English, it is recommended for those who are fluent English speakers and writers.

The Online Therapy Unit website only allows for enrollment in one program at a time. If you are a client currently enrolled in another Online Therapy Unit course, please submit your application for “How Can I Help?” once you have completed your current course.
